The human perspective
Right out of the gate, Sanctuary Lodge’s biggest selling point is its location beside the entrance to Machu Picchu. The views from my room’s balcony were another highlight. This is definitely a luxury-priced hotel, but I felt the staff, good room service and prime location helped justify the cost.
I’d recommend it to travelers celebrating something special or making Machu Picchu the centerpiece of their trip. If you’re spending just one night in the area and have the budget, I’d go for the experience. If price matters more, compare the options in Aguas Calientes.

Sanctuary Lodge, A Belmond Hotel, Machu Picchu
Sanctuary Lodge is a luxury hotel beside Machu Picchu’s entrance, rather than in Aguas Calientes. It is best suited to a trip focused on the archaeological site, where entrance-side convenience matters more than a lower nightly rate. Compare the room’s size, outlook and outdoor space carefully before paying the premium. Rooms: Compare Standard Rooms, Deluxe categories and the One Bedroom Suite. Standard and Deluxe rooms are generally listed at 15–17 square meters; the suite is listed at 35–45 square meters. Outdoor space and outlook vary by category. Reserve a terrace category if that is essential. Nearby attractions: Machu Picchu is the main reason to stay here. The lodge sits beside the archaeological site entrance. Aguas Calientes offers a different base down the mountain; travel between the town and lodge requires planning around transport schedules. Who should book: Travelers who make Machu Picchu the centerpiece of their trip and value staying beside the entrance. Main tradeoffs: Budget, spacious entry-level rooms or evenings in Aguas Calientes matter more. Information checked October 15, 2026. Sources: Belmond official accommodation, booking and FAQ pages.
